One of Jaffer’s fan that goes by the username @being_Abhi18 asked him what is his ‘Favourite memory with Ms Dhoni?’. Wasim Jaffer happily tweeted back with his answer stating that in Dhoni’s ‘1st or 2nd year in India team’ he remembers that Dhoni said ‘he wants to make 30 lakhs from playing cricket so he can live peacefully [for the] rest of his life in Ranchi’. He also added two smiley faces that have an open mouth with one having cold sweat.

Dhoni was supposed to return in action for the 13th Edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on March 29. He last played for the India team in July 2019. 

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic along with the increasing number of active cases in their country, the league is postponed until April 15. India is currently under a 21-day complete lockdown in order to contain the spread of the virus.

An issue as hot as live cricket odds is how HCA officials plan to make a profit even during a pandemic the world is currently enduring. 

The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) defied logic when they paid nearly 160 private clubs and district associations Rs 50,000 each this week. The HCA deposited it into their account, although some members had stated that they were not interested in the money.

Notes that were sent by the HCA to all the club secretaries says that ‘as the world is going through [a] tough time due to COVID-19, the Apex council had decided to fund the clubs with an amount of Rs 50,000’.

However, the note was modified when some of the members objected to it. It says ‘the fund was being given for cricket activities in this crisis time to pay their coaches and supporting staff’.

The move did not go down well with some of the senior members of HCA. They are questioning the motive behind handing out the dole. Even manipulated live cricket odds are not as openly done.

‘The office-bearers have messed up and this money was given so that members keep their mouths shut. How many clubs have coaches, managers and support staff? In fact, a lot of the teams have been leased out to academies and individuals. If the fund was to pay coaches and support staff, why weren’t the institution teams left out?’ asked S Venkateswaran, former in-charge secretary, on an interview.

‘This move benefits multiple club owners. Some Apex council members own several clubs. A person who has a dozen clubs will pocket Rs 6 lakh. At a time when IPL is almost cancelled, the need of the hour is financial prudence. Money should be spent on genuine needs like [the] development of grounds, infrastructure, paying coaches and other personnel,’ he added.

The Apex council members had paid themselves in defiance of the Lodha Committee recommendations as divulged by a former office-bearer. He also expressed that it is nothing but daylight robbery. 

‘The club secretaries are not dependent on the HCA for their living. As per data available, none of the club secretaries is in dire straits. Assuming nobody is in need, that donation should have been made to that member even though that is not correct as per the by-laws,’ expressed Prakash Chand Jain, former vice-president. 

He also voiced that cash or kind should have been given to the clerical and ground staff, umpires, scorers, etc. who earn on a daily basis. Jain disclosed that the grounds staff did not get their bonus, as is the custom after every international match.

R Vijayanand, however, defended the move saying that it was a unanimous decision of the Apex council. He asserted that the fund is not for the secretaries but for the club. ‘I received calls from around 60 club secretaries. If any secretary doesn’t want the money, he can return it to the HCA,’ declared Vijayanand.

Indian cricket Prithvi Shaw shared that he has become more determined to return to cricket amidst his doping ban for 4 months. 

At an early age of 20, the young cricketer has already become the captain of India national under-19 cricket team. He showcased his stellar abilities by scoring a century during his Test debut, that turned the cricket match odds into his team’s favour. 

He also plays as the batsman of the team with a right-handed batting and right-arm off break bowling style.

He also mentioned that when he tried to play cricket, he knew his skills were never rusty; that’s why he anticipated more for a comeback. “If anything, that time off made me a more determined person.” he declared.

Since many cricket matches have been cancelled due to the coronavirus circulating across the globe, Prithvi also shared that the lockdown will allow people to prioritize their mental health.

In July to August 2007, Kohli played for the U-19 tour against Sri Lanka. During this match, he was recorded as the second-highest run-getter with a score of 146 runs in 5 matches. After this achievement, he was able to score an impressive 244 runs at an average of 122 along with a century and a half-century during two Test matches. 

After his successive victories, Kohli made another record during the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup in 2008. He captained the team where he was able to score a whopping 235 runs in 6 matches. He also ended the match as the third-highest run-getter. 

His century during the match against West Indies U-19s was dubbed as the ‘innings of the tournament.’ 

Later that year, Kohli began his international cricket career for the tour of Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy against Pakistan. During the tour in Sri Lanka, batsman Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag suffered an injury. Kohli then had to bat as the opener for the series. The casualties of the COVID-19 pandemic has made it again into the headlines of cricket news since English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Chief Executive Tom Harrison revealed that cricket will approximately lose £380m if the 2020 season remains suspended this summer. 

Due to the pandemic spreading across the globe, many sports’ governing bodies have decided to defer several competitions and tournaments to adhere to the implemented home quarantine in the midst of a nationwide lockdown in each country. 

However, this continued to take a toll on business districts, employers and employees who are forced to stay at home to prevent the further spread of the disease. Many people are worried about their basic needs and how to sustain their everyday life.

Although the government tries to limit the casualties caused by the pandemic through disseminating proper aid and providing mass testing for some countries, the drastic numbers of confirmed cases and death tolls remain on the rise. 

Even sports betting sites were forced to halt operations in terms of placing bets on the cricket odds of the match because there are still no available matches as of now. 

Although online gambling is thriving amid this situation, ECB fears that if this continues, cricket will be greatly affected due to losing a huge sum of money, making it hard to get back on track and smoothly sustain operations upon return.

“Our ability to mitigate the potential financial impact does require us to try when it is safe to do so to play cricket again with government support. It is going to help us fill that hole. We are staring at a £100m-plus loss whatever happens.”  

“The ability for us to play Test cricket is further complicated because bringing in teams from other parts of the world,” he explained. 

Although cricket was supposed to commence in the first week of April 2020, uncertainty still remains prevalent since there is still no cure for the spreading disease, and cricket suspension might last until the start of July. 

In relation, ECB Chief Executive Harrison mentioned, “We anticipate the cost of no cricket this year could be as bad as £380m, that is the worst-case scenario for us. That would be the loss of 800 days of cricket across all of our professional clubs and the ECB,”

“The complexities of lockdown in those nations means there’s a huge amount of complexity to bring teams over, follow government guidelines and get players ready,”

“We are staring at a £100m plus loss this year whatever happens. But with the following wind, hopefully, we will be able to play a significant number of Test matches this summer which will help us mitigate those financial losses,” he explained.

In response to the revenue loss and alleged exclusion of women’s and grassroots cricket, Harrison mentioned, “We will do whatever we can and whatever is in our power to protect women’s cricket.”

Despite the challenges faced by cricket in this unprecedented situation, Harrison remained optimistic with the future of the Hundred ‘profit centre’ project. He says it would accumulate approximately £11m if it was launched this year, that’s why it would definitely become a success in its launch in 2021. 

“In terms of the position we put ourselves in for the Hundred, right at the moment Covid-19 struck we were in a very, very strong place,” Harrison said.

The ECB Chief Executive also mentioned that they were already able to sell 175,000 tickets by the end of February 2020 and was astounded because “the game had never sold that number of tickets at that speed before, with the exception of the Cricket World Cup,” 

“So we were in a very strong position to achieve exactly what we set out to achieve in terms of growing the audience for cricket in this country,” he added.

Lancashire Cricket Club confirmed that Lancashire chairman David Hodgkiss died at the age of 71 due to the Coronavirus. He is the first individual directly involved in the professional British sport to die after having tested positive for COVID-19. Hodgkiss also had underlying health issues even before his passing.

The club published the following statement on Monday morning:

‘Further to the announcement from his family, it is with great sadness that Lancashire Cricket announces the passing of its Chairman; David Hodgkiss, O.B.E.

David served the club with distinction over many years including holding the offices of Treasurer, Vice-Chairman and latterly Chairman.

He was much loved by everyone at Lancashire Cricket Club and respected throughout the cricketing world.

Our sincere condolences and thought and prayers are with his family. A further statement will be released in due course, but at this time we ask that everybody respects that family’s privacy.’

He had been on the board at Old Trafford since 1998 acting the roles of Treasurer and Vice-Chairman before succeeding Michael Cairns in April of 2017 as the Chairman. Hodgkiss was a central figure in the renovation of Old Trafford over the past decade. 

His regime was a period of refurbishment and includes the construction of The Point along with £9 million worth of public funding. Due to the success of his plans, The Old Trafford was awarded both prestigious India vs Pakistan World Cup fixture along with the first semi-final.

At the news of the beloved chairman’s passing, tributes started to flow for David Hodgkiss from the entire sports league. It was led by the managing director of England cricket and the former head coach of Lancashire, Ashley Giles. 

Giles went on his Twitter account to express his grief for the tragedy.

Players also expressed their condolences and shared their impression of the man in the micro-blogging site. 

‘Old Trafford won’t be the same without Hodgkiss,’ said Mike Atherton, the former England and Lancashire star.

Matt Parkinson also wrote how sad the news was and that Hodgkiss is ‘a great man who always had time for everyone and loved the [club]’ and that he will remember the man’s capping speech for a long time.

Alex Davies said this news wa awful and described Hodgkiss as a ‘Funny man who loved the [club]. Played a huge part in getting the club to where it is today’. 

Davies also shared that it was Hodgkiss that gave him his county cap and that he will forever be grateful to the man.

William Livingstone’s tweet declares that it was a piece of devastating news. He also expressed that Hodgkiss was a pleasure to be around.

Every tweet from each of the players expressed how Hodgkiss was a great man who had time for everyone. They also express how Hodgkiss was passionate about cricket and how he helped bring it to where it is today. 

The devastation of not being able to watch any match nor place wagers on crickets odds weighs nothing compared to the news that a great man is no longer on this Earth.

Due to the crisis created by the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, many sports leagues had to shut down or postpone their respective games and matches for the season. He has been spending some time home with his family, especially with his three and a half-year-old son. The England Test captain and his team members find it a strange time because they would have been competing at the second Test in Sri Lanka had the tour not been aborted. Now, they are stuck in a sort of limbo as they focus on the health of their families. Like everyone else, they are also unsure of when they can come back to normality.

On a conference call with journalists, he expressed that he has been ‘... taking it seriously, trying to stay indoors as much as possible, avoid contact at all cost.' 

He finds it ‘... pretty impossible to get [to] online shops at the moment’ as they are trying to get out as little as possible. 

He also indicated that they are trying to be efficient with what they’re buying and using every day like being ‘... creative with our cooking, finding different ways of using what we’ve got in the fridge, not wasting anything’.

Root is expecting to have discussions with the England players over the next few weeks. They will have discussions if they might also offer their support by taking a pay cut. This is in hopes that it will help alleviate some of the financial problems the ECB will come under if there is a significant interruption to the season. 

He is aware that it will be discussions that will take place between the PCA and ECB, however, he admits that it is beyond his area of expertise. 

‘I think we just have to concentrate on making sure we are as fit and as ready to go as we can be for whenever we get back to playing cricket,’ he added. 

The interruption that the pandemic caused to England’s schedule is hardly the most important consequence, but Root admits that not being able to play still frustrates him. The England Test team did good work on their South African tour at the start of the year where they won 3-1. 

‘We made big strides in South Africa. It would have been nice to get those games in to see if we could keep building our away form,’ said Joe Root regarding the wins in the previous Test matches.

He also believes that there ‘... are more important things to concern ourselves with, but we were preparing ourselves well for the two-Test matches in Sri Lanka’.

About not being able to play cricket the whole summer, all the Test team captain can say is ‘... we have to stay optimistic. We’ve got to stay fit. Obviously [we] can’t do much in terms of actual practice, hitting balls and bowling’. 

He can only joke about how his wife will start giving him throwdowns in their back garden and that ‘...until things become that drastic, it will be simply sit tight and wait’.

The England Test team is due to play the West Indies and Pakistan in the series this summer. This forms part of the World Test Championship with the Sri Lanka matches also carrying WTC points. However, it will not be easy to fit the WTC final to the already packed schedules in June next year if the two home series cannot take place. 

The Ashes series in Australia is also coming down the line in Winter 2020/21, albeit a little way off yet. 

Root also declared that ‘A lot of the things we do in Test cricket revolves around planning for the Ash series.’ They have to play around 17 to 20 games before they go down to Australia.

He proclaimed that they have to use every single opportunity they can to build the team up and be absolutely ready for any condition Australia will throw at them, on and off the field. 

There will surely be a spike in the cricket match odds when the matches resume.

Root admits that he has gained useful motivation for the fitness sessions by watching the Amazon Prime documentary about the Australian team, The Test. He undertakes his workout routine in his indoor bike and in his garden with his dog, Archie.

Batsmen love playing cricket in Basin Reserve as it gives them the opportunity to deliver valuable shots due to the built high standard pitch in the field. 

2. Hagley Oval

Following the Basin Reserve, Hagley Oval is known for being the best outfield cricket ground. It has a seating capacity of 18,000 and is located at Christchurch, New Zealand. It has already hosted several cricket matches including those of Test, ODI and T20. 

According to history, the first cricket match held in Hagley Oval took place in 1867 when New Zealand first-class cricket team Canterbury hosted Otago and they continued using the cricket grounds until 1920. 

Since the Hagley Oval offers lots of room spaces for children, families, older people and even university students, they claim it is ‘a ground for all generations’. 

3. Seddon Park 

Seddon Park is one of the favourite grounds for those who love to watch cricket live. The stadium is known for its nice atmosphere and the audience gets excited when the sun rises on the field because they believe it’s an indication of a good cricket match. 

The stadium is located at Hamilton, New Zealand. It has a seating capacity of 10,000 which makes it the fourth largest cricket ground in the country. Seddon Park is also used by the New Zealand national cricket team for cricket training. 

It hosted the first cricket match back in 1914 during an Australian tour with South Auckland XVIII cricket team participating in the match. Aside from cricket, it is also used for hockey, rugby union matches and rugby leagues.

4. Saxton Oval

Saxton Oval is located at Nelson, New Zealand. It has a seating capacity of 6,000 and has been long established since 2009. 

It first hosted a Twenty20 cricket match during 2009-2010 HRV CUP followed by three other T20 format competitions. 

The stadium hosted the 2015 Cricket World Cup and several ODI and T20 matches in the years of 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2019. It also has facilities offered solely for athletics, field hockey, softball and association football. 

Some of the players who achieved centuries in Saxton Oval during ODI matches are New Zealanders Kane Williamson, Neil Broom, Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls, alongside Lendl Simmons from West Indies and Kyle Coetzer from Scotland who also made records in this cricket ground. 

5. Bay Oval 

Bay Oval is located in Mount Maunganui, Tauranga, New Zealand. It can accommodate 10,000 people inside the stadium and has been established since 2007 when the first recorded cricket match took place. 

This stadium was formerly the Blake Park which was established in 1950 and was reconstructed in 2005. During the early years, it was the venue for 24 cricket matches in limited-overs cricket formats. 

After its reconstruction, Bay Oval first hosted men’s and women’s international matches in 2014 and has continued to do so until today. 

Some of the cricketers who scored Test centuries in Bay Oval are BJ Watling and Mitchell Santner.

The Sri Lankan tour of England was already underway during the spread of panic across other countries on the pandemic. Although taking extreme precautions, the England National Cricket Team had already braved their travels and was already playing a 3-day practice match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI. 

After ECB announced the suspension of their Sri Lankan tour, the players had played for a brief minute. The suspension requested that all England players are to be sent home immediately. The officials called the game off. 

Soon enough, they abandoned the match at Colombo, resulting in a draw. 

Abandoned Matches

Typically, fulfilled cricket matches only end in a win, draw or a tie. The game can also be considered a ‘no result’ during limited overs. Abandoned matches are decided in a different way.

Like in this coronavirus scare, abandoned matches are decided when any condition prohibits players from playing on the field. An example of this is when rainy or stormy weather heightens the difficulty and danger of the game. This also happens when a match receives bad lighting from both the natural and artificial source. 

The first abandoned match recorded was of West Indies and England in 1998. The teams already played for 10 overs before the match was deemed unplayable. In 2009, a similar event on a newly built sandy outfield occurred. Players could not bowl or bat well in the risky area.  

Officials can announce that a game is officially abandoned. When the ball is bowled, abandoned matches, after a ruling in 2004, are set to have either a drawn or no result match. This is similar to the England vs Sri Lanka practice match that happened where the match was claimed as a draw. 

Abandoned matches can also be proclaimed during the first over of play where no cricketer has already started a run-up. These are then called matches which are 'abandoned without a ball being bowled'. These are matches that are not recorded in official stats records. 

For wagered outright and live cricket odds, even though the games are considered as drawn. The match results are often deemed void or valid if they are rescheduled 48 hours later.

Game Cancellations

Cricket matches are not easily cancelled. This is since events have to be rescheduled. A bigger factor is that international cricket games involve bodies of states, not just any simple organization.

Joe Root of England said in an interview, ‘You think how things might have gone – being in isolation here, disconnected from the team, without the security we would usually have around us at the ground or the hotel. If one of the lads was to get it in these conditions, or a member of the public travelling, it could be quite a scary experience.’

The team went home after the announcement immediately.
